Colin Twiname (32), who timed the ball well on a true easy paced pitch, and Tom Jacques (13) added 48 in 13 overs before Jacques fell lbw to Adrian Osmotherly (2/58).  Former Shireshead player Graham Cheetham (1/68) bowled 18 overs off the reel producing a beauty that pitched and held its line to account for Twiname.  Paul Yates (31) and Mike Park (35) added 57 in 15 overs, before Park was run out which brought Phil Oliver to the wicket.  Oliver was at his belligerent best, smiting the ball to all parts of the ground, in making 62 from 30 balls and needing only 25 balls for his fifty.  Three 4s and five 6s were hit before he was well caught by Steve Bransby from the bowling of Barry Smith (2/60).  A cameo of 17 not out from Ray Riley enabled Yates to declare at the end of the 44th over.

After Frank Smith (8) was lbw to Phil Savage (1/42), Osmotherly (45) and John Moller (19) added 42, and Bare had reached 83/2 from 24 overs before Mike Park (3/27) dismissed Osmotherly and O’Donald (0) in his first over.  With Jacques (2/31) picking up Andrew Sharman (2), John Sharman and Cheetham (12) dug in.  Park dismissed Cheetham lbw in the 37th over and Barry Smith (13) joined Sharman in pursuit of a bonus point.  When it was reached Smith, restricted by a back injury, retired hurt.  Sharman finished on 43 not out made from 78 balls, batting skilfully to give the visitors two points in their fight against relegation.

Sedgwick 122 Shireshead & Forton 'A' 124/6

Since the late nineteenth century cricket has been played at the beautiful Sedgwick House ground, originally the home of a gunpowder manufacturer.  On Saturday it was the visitors who set off the fireworks after gaining their first win in four games.

Winning the toss skipper Simon Moulson elected to field first and received full support from his opening bowlers. Rahul Sabharwal (2/20) dismissed Chris Mason (0) and G.Singleton (0) to fine catches with only four runs on the scoreboard.Mike Bracken (34) and Simon Willacy (21) added 37 for the third wicket before Joy Arun (1/23) bowled Willacy. In his second spell the impressive Alex Taylor (2/28) removed M.Freeman (2) and Carlton Mason (12) , and aided by late replacement Jack Kilshaw (2/18) who had Greenwood (3) caught and next ball dismissed the dangerous Bracken. Jack Dodd (3/18) ended the home side's innings with only S.Garnett (22 n/o) giving some resistance.

Graham Swindlehurst (22) and Jack Dodd (22) began patiently against good swing bowling from J.Matthews (0/14) and M.Freeman (0/12).The score was on 39 when A.Mathews (4/41) trapped Swindlehurst in front of all three stumps. The introduction of veteran Simon Willacy (2/28) put the brakes on the Shireshead reply with six consecutive maidens.

A fourth wicket stand of 38 by Sam Hilton (28) and John Coates (13) pushed the visitors closer to victory. Coates, still nursing two black eyes from the previous week, batted sensibly against Simon Willacy, and upon his dismissal only 19 runs were needed.  Sam Clarkson (21 n/o) and Rahul Sabharwal (4 n/o) steered the visitors over the line with 5 overs to spare.

Kendal 3rd 115 for 5 Shireshead 3rd  118 for 2

Kendal won the toss and elected to bat.  Openers Phil Ellwood and skipper Andy Crellen built a solid foundation until Ellwood was run out when the score was 69 in the 21st over.  His 39 included six fours.  Crellen (27) succumbed to the bowling of Matthew Liptrott (1/19)  in the next over and after that scoring became much slower and Keith Donoghue (14 no) and Jenna Wood (11 no) held on to the end of the innings.

In reply, after the dismissal of opener Simeon Glen (6) who lobbed a loose shot into the hands of David Phillips off the bowling of Ellwood, when the score was 12, skipper Tony Richmond  and Liptrott (46) enjoyed themselves with shots all over the ground.  Richmond reached his 50 in 70 minutes and when Liptrott was stumped just four short of his 50, they had a partnership of 100 for the 2nd wicket.  Oliver Yates (2no) joined Richmond  for the final 8 balls.  Richmond’s 55no included nine fours.

Trimpell A 200 for 9 Shireshead 3rd 151

Having won the toss, Shireshead put Trimpell in to bat and soon found themselves facing a large target as loose bowling gave many scoring opportunities.  The only early success of note was the splendid slip catch by Matthew Liptrott off the bowling of Peter Dodd (1/33).  A stand of 85 between S. Mayor (54) and A. Churton (41) in only 38 minutes was the major contributor to the score of 200/9 in 30 six ball overs.  Among the bowlers, only Mike Bailey (3/22) emerged with credit.

The Shireshead innings started disastrously as S. Burrow took 4 wickets in his first three overs and the position looked hopeless as the score stood at 13 for 5.
Steven Yates, however, seemed unperturbed by the loss of partners and with young Alex Taylor took the score from 27/6 to 126/7 when he fell to a catch by S. McClements off the bowling of A. Horrobin. He hit seven fours and eight massive sixes, one of which cleared the pavilion. His score of 90 is one of the memorable performances for Shireshead this season. The only other player to reach double figures was Taylor (21) who played with great assurance, clearly a young player of great promise.
