MATCH DRAWN WESTGATE 8pts SHIRESHEAD & FORTON 2pts
Westgate began their championship defence by opting to bat first on a pitch that offered considerable horizontal variation if not excessive lateral movement. Steve Creed (0) fell lbw trying to pull the impressive Phil Savage’s fourth ball, but Rodger Hill (32) and Peter Wilson (35) gave the home side a positive start adding 59 in 17 overs before both fell to Tom Jacques (2/50). When the miserly Phil Oliver (1/19) dismissed David Lord (5) Westgate were in some trouble at 75/4, but the mercurial Danny Wilkinson (40) survived a chance and early uncertainty, deciding that the bludgeon was the best way out of the corner he found himself in. He hit two 6s and fours 4s in a 45 ball innings before being bowled by Dave Jack (2/59) in the opening bowler’s improved second spell. Andy Hill (18) and Nigel Parkinson (12 not out) ensured that 48 were added from the last 10 overs. Savage took two wickets in his second spell to return creditable figures of 3/34 from 13 overs.
Wilson (4/24) and Wilkinson (2/23) quickly reduced Shireshead to 19/5 in the 11th over. Paul Yates (43 not out) found an admirable ally in young batsman Robert Charles (25) who exquisitely drove his first ball from Wilson to the long off boundary. Showing a full array of shots he was clearly disappointed when a loose shot separated the two left-handers after a partnership of 50 in 16 overs. Oliver (20) added 35 in 11 overs with Yates, but when Wilkinson bowled him Shireshead decided to bat out for the draw with the redoubtable Yates being joined by Tim Mansfield (9 not out) for the final eleven overs.
Shireshead A 112 Westgate A 115/5
A sustained dry spell gave an unfamiliar look to Clifton
Park on the commencement of Shireshead’s centenary season. Having won the toss skipper Simon Moulson elected to
bat on a very dry flat pitch with lighting outfields. The opening bowlers for
Westgate Rob Shillitoe (3/21) and Sulemen(1/10) ripped through the home side’s
top order. John Coates(0), Simeon Glen(0) and Robert Skipworth (1) found the
swinging ball difficult to deal with, and at 4 for 3 Shireshead were heading
for embarrassment.
The seasoned middle order gave some
respectability to the total with Moulson (20), and on his return to the club
MalcolmTaylor (26).The introduction of slow bowler Zac Buchanan (3/23) finished
off the Shirehead innings, but not before 17 year old Sam Clarkson scored
4 boundaries in his innings of 25.
The Westgate reply started slowly and at 29 for 3
the home side sniffed a chance. New signing
Matthew Cooper(3/43) swung the ball beautifully aided by the control of Alan
Moulsdale(2/36).
The game was taken away from the home side by Mohamed
Patel (48 not out) including four sixes and supported by Sulemen(19). Victory to Westgate came in the 27th over with the
home side ruing four dropped catches in a poor start to the season.
Holme A 109 Shireshead
3rd 34
Shireshead won the toss and put in Holme.
Liam Teasdale (3) was the first to fall to the economical bowling of young
Oliver Lawson (2/16) when he lobbed a catch into the safe hands of Kedar Patwardhan.
Then there was a stand of 34 for the second wicket between John Wolfenden (20)
and Carl Weiss (20) before Weiss was bowled by Mike Bailey (2/41). After
that no-one shone brilliantly though skipper Al Strong (18) proved to
be the anchor man, starting his innings with 13 off eight balls, which
included three fours, and the innings closed when he was caught by skipper Tony
Richmond off the bowling of young Richard Phillips.
Shireshead started with high hopes, having been gifted an extra 11 overs. However, the lack of a greater number of mature players began to take its toll as Weiss and Strong tore through the batting order, with only veteran Geoff Hornby (12) holding out for as long as possible before becoming Weiss’s 4th victim when the score was 31. It was all over in the 22nd over. Weiss took 5 for 10 off 11 overs with 8 maidens, and Strong 4 for 21 off 10.1 overs which included 4 maidens.
